Preview of Internet Explorer 10

Microsoft has announced that it is working on Internet Explorer 10. Not content with the release of IE9 just one month ago, Microsoft has plans to release an update on the new browser every 12 weeks.
It so happened that at the Mix11 review in Las Vegas, Microsoft made the jump into prime time, not with its IE9 product (that is so old last weeks news), but with a challenge to Google and Mozilla about the pending browser wars. Some may have been counting one Microsoft quietly going away with its browser, but not Microsoft. And maybe some of the management changes that have been taking place in Redmond are paying off. (No resting on your laurels!…get going.)

IE9 and HTML5

Where does HTML5 stand on the Web today? Apparently it is on Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9. Here’s the kicker. With Internet Explorer 9, websites are now in a position to take advantage of the power of modern hardware and a modern operating system. This will deliver user experiences that were not possible a year ago. And with that operational view point, Internet Explorer 10 will be able to push the boundaries of what developers can do on the Web even further.

IE9 is the only browser that uses hardware-accelerated HTML5. This capability spans all graphics, text, audio and video products and sites. IE9 was the first browser to introduce innovations, like hardware acceleration, which was built on HTML5 support. This lets it move fast and integrate Web experiences with multiple software platforms. So the first platform preview of IE 10 builds on the IE9 innovations, but it anticipates additional standards, such as CSS3 Gradients on background images and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout. These standards will find their way into IE10.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview allows you to test the technology in Microsoft's upcoming browser.

This preview only works in Windows 7, and is essentially just a window that will display web pages. To navigate to a page, press Ctrl + O and enter the URL you want. It's hardly user friendly, but it's not supposed to be. Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview is meant for web developers and anyone interested in testing and debugging the technology.

You can view various test sites with Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview, especially designed to show off IE 10's HTML 5 performance, like the all new Fish Bowl site. If you want the most up-to-date version of IE, you can download Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview shows off the early development of Microsoft's popular browser.
