Windows Vista Video Cards

Windows Vista is a new and powerful operating system that comes with an improved performance but also with higher requirements. Running it on a computer that does not respect the necessary features might create you some problems. The thing is that video cards are an important hardware component and they are among the first items that need to match with Vista. While graphics companies started to develop the so - called Windows Vista video cards, some other models might also suit to it, without necessary having this etiquette – especially for Vista.

There are two main directions you can choose to follow. If you are not ready to make major investments, you can look for an older model of video card, but also strong enough to handle this operating system. Nvidia, ATI or Asus – otherwise said all the major producers – can give you something like that. However, if you want from Windows Vista the best you can get, you should start doing some research on the market of these specialized products. Vista can offer you, optionally, the Aero Glass interface, which together with a strong video card will give you an incredible video performance.

Classic graphics
Here are three products that can decently run under the new operating system. Nvidia GeForce with its 210 model. You can choose either the 512 MB or the 1 GB memory version. Preferably the 1 GB one, for a better performance. It can run on both 32 and 64 – bit, wich is great. It can process DVDs in the Blu-ray and HD formats. And it can also face various sophisticated games. ATI Radeon, the 5550 model, is another candidate to take into consideration. Just like the other one it works on 32 and 64 – bit, supports HD and Blu-ray plus the DirectX 11. This one will sure improve the quality of any video format you are using. In addition, the video card has three output slots, which means you can always use up to three different monitors in the same time on your computer. Last but not least, Asus has an offer for you too – the EAH4670 model, 512M. Using it will allow you to visualize uncompressed video files and to connect flat-panel monitors to hold resolutions for up to 2560 x 1600.
Vista graphics cards
Have you ever thought on trying a dedicated graphics? Dedicated means it has a special amount of RAM used only by the video card to process information. This will sure take some pressure from the processor, enabling it to run the system even faster. They will work best with motherboards that have PCI Express or AGP slots. The integrated graphics are actually special graphics processors working with a part of the system’s RAM. This option is considerably less expensive than the one of a dedicated card, but it it also less viable and will barely support powerful games.

And I have saved the best for last. The PCI video card vista – ready, released by Diamond. It is the X1300 model, at 256 MB of DDR2 memory. It even has 3D features. The graphics processor is clocked at 450 MHz. But in order to use this graphics you must also have an at least a Pentium 4 processor from Intel, or an AMD Athlon one, the 64 FX type, more than 500 MB of free space on the hard drive and also a power source of at least 420 W.
Bottom line
If you want to go for Vista, you have various options from where to choose regarding the video cards. You just have to analyze all the situations. Moreover, you might want to first try this operating system on another computer, to see how it works, before you make the change.

In 2015, the world smartphone leader will be Android

A NEW report by market researcher IDC predicts a surprising future for the smartphone wars.
It claims Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform will grow to reach 20.9 per cent of the worldwide smartphone operating system market and become the second most used operating system in the world.
Much less surprising is the prediction that Android will increase its market share from 39.5 per cent in 2011 to 45.4 per cent in 2015 while becoming the number one smartphone operating system.
"Android is poised to take over as the leading smartphone operating system in 2011 after racing into the number 2 position in 2010," IDC senior research analyst Ramon Llamas said.
IDC's Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team released the report yesterday.
An influx of low-priced (mostly Android-powered) smartphones is expected to be the catalyst many consumers needed to trade in their feature phones for new, more capable devices in the coming years.

The introduction of entry-level smartphones targeted at first-time buyers, combined with the ever-flowing stream of cutting-edge smartphones that drive the high end of the market, is expected to help the smartphone market to grow more than four times faster than the overall mobile phone market in 2011.
The worldwide smartphone market will expand by 49.2 per cent in 2011, IDC said. Smartphone shipments will be boosted from 303.4 million units in 2010 to 450 million in 2011.
One of the biggest disruptions to the future smartphone market is Microsoft's newly formed partnership with Nokia.
IDC believes the Microsoft-Nokia deal will shake up the market and propel the company's Windows Phone 7 platform from behind players like RIM's BlackBerry, Apple's iOS and Nokia's Symbian platform to the second-most used operating system in the world in just four years.
"Up until the launch of Windows Phone 7 last year, Microsoft has steadily lost market share while other operating systems have brought forth new and appealing experiences," Mr Llamas said.
"The new alliance brings together Nokia's hardware capabilities and Windows Phone's differentiated platform.
"We expect the first devices to launch in 2012. By 2015, IDC expects Windows Phone to be number two operating system worldwide behind Android."
IDC's report shows Windows Phone 7 growing from a tiny 5.5 per cent in 2011 to 20.9 per cent in 2015.
Nokia's Symbian platform will be slowly phased out as the company moves to integrate Microsoft's WP7 in its new handsets and will drop from second place and a 20.9 per cent share of the market in 2011 to just 0.2 per cent in 2015.
Apple's iOS market share will remain relatively stable, shifting from 15.7 per cent to 15.3 per cent and RIM's BlackBerry OS will drop slightly from 14.9 per cent in 2011 to 13.7 per cent in 2015.

Many people are calling it the ‘WoW Killer’ and with the exceptional work gone into Biowares other games like The Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect it’s hard to see how anything can go wrong. The unique and expansive world of Star Wars is a great gaming environment as we have seen in other attempts to successfully make a good Star Wars MMO. Free Download VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware

Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware is high-performance security software that doesn't slow down your PC like older, traditional antivirus products. Vipre combines antivirus, antispyware, anti-rootkit, anti-malware, and other security technologies into a seamless, tightly-integrated security solution. Vipre delivers comprehensive protection against today's highly complex spyware, viruses, and blended malware threats for PC and e-mail security.

Vipre Antivirus has a great combination of features, and though the company is relatively new on the security scene, their antivirus software is one of the best. It’s not a typo, ‘VIPRE’ stands for Virus Intrusion Prevention Remediation Engine. The software includes antivirus and antispyware protection, as well as a number of additional compelling features.

Probably the most unique offering from Vipre is their unlimited home site license option. With the unlimited license you can run the software on as many computers (as well as laptops and netbooks) that you have at home. For families with three or more PCs, this is a very affordable option.

Scope of Protection:

Sunbelt Software’s Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware doesn’t just protect from viruses and spyware, but also covers rootkits, Trojans, worms, keyloggers, dialers, adware, malicious scripts, and a number of other malware threats. Vipre’s big push is to keep your computer protected from viruses that may not be on traditional signature databases yet.

This proactive protection is made possible by incorporating advanced heuristic detection, including the MX-Virtualization. This technology allows Vipre to run files in a sterile Windows-like emulator and observe how it behaves. If the files act up, they are appropriately identified as malware. Combine this with real-time, kernel-level antivirus security, and Vipre is well equipped to guard your PC from threats from different angles.

Effectiveness:

Vipre is an effective antivirus (and antispyware) desktop solution. Powered by Sunbelt Software, the software has received the checkmark certification from West Coast Labs as an effective antivirus software. The antivirus software has also been evaluated and certified by ICSA labs, and has received the VB100 award.

One feature that helps keep Vipre on top of protection is the advanced heuristic technologies, Genscan and Cobra. These advanced features help Vipre dynamically locate malware before it even has the chance to cause any problems on your PC.

Ease of Installation:

Vipre Antivirus has a fairly thorough installation process, but it’s not overwhelming. It’s not super quick, and requires a restart, but it’s not hard by any means.

Vipre was engineered from the bottom up, and specifically designed not to be a system hog. And while there are trimmer antivirus applications, Vipre Antivirus holds up to their promise to deliver a resource- efficient program. Vipre certainly has one of the most efficient antivirus scanning engines available, and should leave users pleasantly surprised with no PC slowdown.

Ease of Use:

Vipre’s antivirus software is quite simple to use. The simple user interface and navigation make for a pretty intuitive experience. Setting specific scans on a schedule or adjusting settings are no trouble. Even better, for the most part Vipre runs seamlessly in the background, requiring very little user input.

Features:

Vipre Antivirus has a number of useful tools that ensure security, and are just plain convenient. The secure file eraser lets you completely and permanently remove sensitive files from your computer. The software also includes an integrated history cleaning utility (to cover your tracks online), and simple access to some PC tools that normally are hard to find.

Vipre is also fully equipped to protect your computer from email-borne threats. The active email scanning will keep your inbox free of malicious files, and even scans outbound mail so you won’t pass any viruses on to your friends/coworkers/family by accident.

Vipre has all the essentials, but we would have liked to see an integrated silent ‘gamer’ mode and password-protected settings.

Updates:

As with almost every antivirus software, updates from Vipre are set up to run automatically (but can also be performed manually if needed). The program is set by default to run updates every few hours, but can be manually set to run every hour if desired. More importantly, Vipre utilizes a security network that enables them to deliver updates to your PC immediately as the need should arise.

Help & Support:

Sunbelt’s support for Vipre Antivirus is pretty good, and includes in-program help files, and additional assistance online. Most common issues can be fixed by taking a look at the KnowledgeBase, user guide, or support forums. Individual questions can be directed to their service department through email, phone, or even online chat (all U.S. based).

Summary:

Overall, Vipre Antivirus is a very good security solution. The software has all the essentials, and several advanced features (heuristic, behavioral analysis, real-time protection) that work efficiently to deliver a fairly complete antivirus package. The unique “home site license” allows you to install the software on as many computers as you have at home (a valuable solution for many home users).

Free Download Norman Antivirus & Antispyware

Norman Antivirus & Antispyware is a decent antivirus software, but just doesn’t stack up to the heavy-hitters. The software has an ok lineup of features and pretty good detection, but fails in execution. The interface has certainly been improved, but still isn’t great.

Scope of Protection:
Norman Antivirus & Antispyware covers the basics (viruses and spyware, obviously) like protection from keyloggers, rootkits, Trojans and worms. The software also has comprehensive email protection, scanning emails coming into your inbox, as well as messages you send. For more protection from Norman, you can look into the Norman Security Suite, which incorporates a personal firewall and parental controls.

Effectiveness:
Norman’s antivirus software left us a bit disappointed with its comparatively low security. The software passed the most recent Virus Bulletin 100% test (for Vista), but failed on the XP test. Furthermore, the test found Norman on the low end of the competition, achieving a cumulative proactive/reactive score of only 48%.

Norman Antivirus & Antispyware also struggled on the AV Comparatives test, which they also didn’t pass. In the test, Norman had an overall detection rate of 84.8%, but “overprotected” by mistaking over 40 false positives.

Ease of Installation:
Norman’s antivirus software is pretty straightforward to install (only took us 5 minutes), and doesn’t require restarting a restart. After installation is complete, Norman sets out immediately to update itself. And while the software is setup to run completely in the background, setting up specific scheduled scans or performing a manual scan isn’t too difficult.

Ease of Use:
Norman’s interface is fairly straightforward and easy to use (and significantly better than the previous versions basic setup). The main categories of the software are setup as tabs on the left side of the dashboard, and accommodate fairly simple navigation within the software.

Features:
Norman features a antivirus screensaver. This allows the software to recognize that the system is idle, and run the antivirus scan while the system resources are free.

The antivirus software also includes advanced heuristic detection. With the Norman SandBox technology, the software can proactively look at files in a safe area (without the possibility of infecting your computer) to see how the file behaves. This feature is combined with DNA matching, which lets Norman effectively find malware that is so new it’s not on signature databases yet, but still exhibits malicious code, and is part of the virus ‘family’.

Updates:
Regular updates are essential for up-to-date security, so Norman delivers them automatically. The automatic updates are performed daily, though you can also set it up to run every 12 or 6 hours. Of course you can always manually update with the click of a button. Users also have the option to configure updates to work if they’re using a proxy server.

Help & Support:
The support for Norman Antivirus & Antispyware was fine, but nothing great. Online help resources include an archive of previously addressed help issues, and a user manual. Email support is available, but phone support costs $20 per incident.

Summary:
All-in-all, Norman Antivirus & Antispyware is a fairly lackluster program. As other security software manufacturers have made large strides to improve their usability, performance and protection, Norman has fallen a bit behind.

Features and support

Under the clean and uncluttered interface, Security Essentials wraps up antivirus and antispyware engines, rootkit protection, and real-time detection courtesy of Microsoft SpyNet, the unfortunately named cloud-based service that anonymously compares file behavior across computers running various Microsoft operating systems.
SpyNet was introduced in Windows Vista and extended to Windows 7, but Microsoft Security Essentials is the only way to access the network in Windows XP. Unlike other security vendors that allow customers to take advantage of the benefits of their behavioral detection engines while opting out of submitting information, there's no way to do that with SpyNet.
Well, it's mostly anonymous. You can choose between two SpyNet memberships. The basic membership submits to Microsoft the detected software's origins, your response to it, and whether that action was successful, and the advanced membership submits all that plus the location on your hard drive of the software in question, how it operates, and how it has affected your computer. Both basic and advanced versions warn users that personal data might be "accidentally" sent to Microsoft, although they promise to neither identify nor contact you. New in version 2 is the option to opt out of contributing to SpyNet while still receiving the benefits of crowd-sourced security.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 uses both definition-file and real-time defenses against viruses and spyware, and also offers rootkit protection. Along with the quick scan and the full scan, there's a Custom scan option that lets users select specific folders or drives to scan. It doesn't allow for customizing the type of scan used. For example, you're not going to be able to choose to scan only for rootkits or heuristics, as you can with other security programs. However, you can set USB keys and other external devices to automatically get scanned. The program installs a context-menu option for on-the-fly scanning in Windows Explorer, too.
The Update pane manages the definition file updates, with a large action button, and History provides access to a spreadsheet-style list of All detection items, your Quarantine, and items you've Allowed to run. Although it's a basic layout, this no-frills approach to security has proven appealing to people who are overwhelmed by more detailed security choices.
New in version 2 is integration with Internet Explorer so that downloads get scanned, and Windows firewall hooks so that your personal security net is tighter. For Windows 7 and Vista users, the Windows Filtering Platform that those two operating systems come with gets a boost from a new network inspection feature.
The Settings window allows you to further customize the program by scheduling scans, toggling default actions to take against threats, adjusting real-time protection settings, creating whitelists of excluded files, file types, and processes, and choosing from the aforementioned SpyNet options. There's also an Advanced option that is still fairly basic: here you can set Security Essentials to scan archives and removable drives, create a system restore point, and expand user rights to allow all users to view the History tab
Security Essentials comes preconfigured to run a scan weekly at 2 a.m., when Microsoft thinks your system is likely to be idle. New malware signatures are downloaded once per day by default, although you can manually instigate a definition file update through the update tab. Attachments and downloaded files will be automatically scanned by Security Essentials.
Help is only available in the form of the standard offline Help manual that comes with all Microsoft programs. There's nothing fancy here.
MSE abandons the additional heft of a firewall, performance tuning, and backup and restore options to focus on core security. However, the new version does include a system restore option, to back up your computer before you remove any detected malware. Most of the changes in MSE 2 are under the hood, but it's still a worthwhile program in terms of features, especially on lower-powered Netbooks.

EA's Downside Surprise: Gaming Isn't Recession Proof After All

The notion of technology as being relatively insulated from the credit crunch imploded earlier this year. It now appears the idea of the video segment being practically recession proof is heading for the same outcome.

Shares of Electronic Arts tumbled nearly 18% Friday, even as the broader market continued its recent rally. Late Thursday, the video game maker reported a wider-than-expected loss for its fiscal second quarter and forecast much weaker-than-expected bottom-line results for the full fiscal year.

EA was hit by company-specific issues; namely, aging titles and the delayed release of the next Harry Potter movie until summer 2009, meaning no related video game sales this holiday season.

But EA is not alone in suffering. After reporting very strong sales figures for the first half of its fiscal year, Wii maker Nintendo warned that its fiscal year profits won't meet prior expectations due to a stronger yen and weaker global economy.

As for non-consumer technology, AmEx's plans to cut technology-related spending is another blow to companies like Sun Microsystems, which fell 13% Friday after reporting weaker-than-expected fiscal first quarter results.

At this point, only IBM and H-P have been relatively unscathed by the global economy's woes. How long can that last?

Does EA Have the Economy to Blame or Itself?

So much for that "cocooning" theory that games would be the protected part of the tech economy this holiday season. Electronic Arts warned investors today that it would miss its fiscal 2009 targets, given lackluster holiday sales.

But is this a problem with gaming or EA? My guest Om Malik, of GigaOm, blames EA, and it’s reliance on big, expensive Hollywood-style games, instead of more nimble social, mobile or Wii games. "We give them too much credit for being smart just because they are big," he says of the second largest game maker. Ouch.

More on how EA could, ahem, get back in the game on the clip.

Hard Disk Drive

A magnetic disk on which you can store computer data. The term hard is used to distinguish it from a soft, or floppy, disk. Hard disks hold more data and are faster than floppy disks. A hard disk, for example, can store anywhere from 10 to more than 100 gigabytes, whereas most floppies have a maximum storage capacity of 1.4 megabytes.
A single hard disk usually consists of several platters. Each platter requires two read/write heads, one for each side. All the read/write heads are attached to a single access arm so that they cannot move independently. Each platter has the same number of tracks, and a track location that cuts across all platters is called a cylinder. For example, a typical 84 megabyte hard disk for a PC might have two platters (four sides) and 1,053 cylinders.
In general, hard disks are less portable than floppies, although it is possible to buy removable hard disks.

A hard disk is part of a unit, often called a "disk drive," "hard drive," or "hard disk drive," that stores and provides relatively quick access to large amounts of data on an electromagnetically charged surface or set of surfaces. Today's computers typically come with a hard disk that contains several billion bytes (gigabytes) of storage.
A hard disk is really a set of stacked "disks," each of which, like phonograph records, has data recorded electromagnetically in concentric circles or "tracks" on the disk. A "head" (something like a phonograph arm but in a relatively fixed position) records (writes) or reads the information on the tracks. Two heads, one on each side of a disk, read or write the data as the disk spins. Each read or write operation requires that data be located, which is an operation called a "seek." (Data already in a disk cache, however, will be located more quickly.)

A hard disk/drive unit comes with a set rotation speed varying from 4500 to 7200 rpm. Disk access time is measured in milliseconds. Although the physical location can be identified with cylinder, track, and sector locations, these are actually mapped to a logical block address (LBA) that works with the larger address range on today's hard disks.

Capacity and Performance
A typical desktop machine will have a hard disk with a capacity of between 10 and 40 gigabytes. Data is stored onto the disk in the form of files. A file is simply a named collection of bytes. The bytes might be the ASCII codes for the characters of a text file, or they could be the instructions of a software application for the computer to execute, or they could be the records of a data base, or they could be the pixel colors for a GIF image. No matter what it contains, however, a file is simply a string of bytes. When a program running on the computer requests a file, the hard disk retrieves its bytes and sends them to the CPU one at a time.

There are two ways to measure the performance of a hard disk:

  • Data rate - The data rate is the number of bytes per second that the drive can deliver to the CPU. Rates between 5 and 40 megabytes per second are common.
  • Seek time - The seek time is the amount of time between when the CPU requests a file and when the first byte of the file is sent to the CPU. Times between 10 and 20 milliseconds are common.
The other important parameter is the capacity of the drive, which is the number of bytes it can hold.

How Hard Disks Work
Nearly every desktop computer and server in use today contains one or more hard-disk drives. Every mainframe and supercomputer is normally connected to hundreds of them. You can even find VCR-type devices and camcorders that use hard disks instead of tape. These billions of hard disks do one thing well -- they store changing digital information in a relatively permanent form. They give computers the ability to remember things when the power goes out.

What is Format ?
To prepare a storage medium, usually a disk, for reading and writing. When you format a disk, the operating system erases all bookkeeping information on the disk, tests the disk to make sure all sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors (that is, those that are scratched), and creates internal address tables that it later uses to locate information. You must format a disk before you can use it.
Formatting a Hard Disk Drive
When do you need to be concerned with formatting hard disk drive? If you're installing a new hard drive for the first, removing errors from your drive, trying to get rid of a nasty virus, or even cleaning your hard drive because you are selling or donating your computer are just a few of the many reasons why one might consider formatting a hard drive.

Free Download McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010

McAfee has gone and done something drastic for the 2010 version of its basic security program, and we're not talking about the new name. McAfee AntiVirus Plus, which last year was known as McAfee VirusScan Plus, has a new interface that redefines how to streamline the complex and varied tools currently available in A-list security programs.

The the new and unusual top-down design is surprisingly easy to use, with clear delineations between features. Potentially confusing names have been jettisoned. For example, firewall settings control how you access the Web, so they're listed under Web and E-mail Protection. Also, McAfee stands out for not only color-coding what your status is, but also adding in what that means. The "Your computer is secure" message is bolstered by "No action required," a helpful tip. Click on any of the four categories just below the status bar and the pane just to the right reveals links to drill deeper into your security status. Mouse over the big subcategories at the bottom and a general status message appears next to the name. Click on one to for more configuration settings.

The biggest feature update comes to McAfee's real-time defense engine, called Artemis. In the 2010 version, it works in conjunction with McAfee's SiteAdvisor to scan downloads as they occur. The scans include using real-time URL, IP address, and domain name data in conjunction with a blend of blacklists, whitelists, and cloud analysis to evaluate downloads for threats before they land on your hard drive. According to McAfee, its 2010 suite has huge leaps in performance, due in part to selective process loading when you boot, and in part to flagging already-examined files as safe. Overall, we found McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 to be a much-needed and long-overdue improvement to McAfee's consumer protection line.

Free Download G DATA AntiVirus 2011

With over 20 years in the computer security business and continued growth, G Data is one of the best antivirus programs in the industry, and it shows with their simple and valuable security software. G Data AntiVirus 2011 continues the trend, delivering a high level of security and an easy-to-use product. With their new version, they have simplified the interface and navigation, and optimized the software for better overall detection and protection.

Scope of Protection:

G Data’s AntiVirus software isn’t a full internet security suite, but it comes pretty close with comprehensive protection. Antivirus and antispyware protection are combined with complete web protection. The software is equipped and armed to protect your computer from any number of threats (online or off), including phishing scams, dialers, adware, malicious scripts, Trojans, rootkits, worms and more.

The software also incorporates advanced protection from malware spread through email or IM. The software goes as far as scanning outbound email (messages you send) for viruses and other malware, so you won’t accidentally pass along a threat to your friends or coworkers.

Effectiveness:

G Data’s protection level is second to none, delivering consistent maximum protection. One way they do this is with their DoubleScan technology. By utilizing two distinct virus scanners (don’t worry, you still won’t notice any slowdown), one can pick up anything the other might have missed. The 2011 edition incorporates the scanning engines from BitDefender and Avast!

AntiVirus from G Data continues to perform remarkably well with third party testers. AV Comparatives found the software to be in tip-top shape. While the software wasn’t the fastest, the 10.6MB/sec scanning speed was more than adequate, and G DATA came away with the highest total detection rate: an almost perfect score of 99.6%. (Needless to say, the software came away with the coveted Advanced A+ certification).

Virus Bulletin also found this antivirus solution to be more than adequate, and certified the software with the VB 100%.

G Data has outperformed most if not all other antivirus programs. The general consensus is that while they might be a bit slower (keyword being bit) than some, it is certainly one of the most thorough and effective at detecting and removing viruses and malware. And when it comes right down to it, isn’t that the most important?

Ease of Installation:

The whole installation process took under 10 minutes, and only required one restart. All things considered, the software was straightforward to download and install.

While you can simply install the software and forget about it, additional setup is pretty quick and will help you schedule scans and customize settings.

G Data AntiVirus uses two scanning engines, but certainly doesn’t take twice as long as other security software. In fact, the program is actually fairly fast and resource efficient. While it’s not the most efficient with your system resources, it certainly is better than most antivirus software (and shouldn’t cause any system heartburn).

Ease of Use:

G DATA’s antivirus software is remarkably simple to not only implement, but use. Advanced users or the overly cautious type should have no problem manually using the program and monitoring performance. More importantly, beginners and users who just need the software to work without much intervention will also have no trouble simply letting G DATA run in the background.

The new simplified interface brings most of the functions right to the front, easily accessible on the main dashboard. The main screen hosts a quick security status overview, and if there are any problems, you can fix them with one click.

Features:

G Data AntiVirus comes equipped with all the essential tools to keep your computer safe. And while it doesn’t have some of the additional features that add convenience (silent gamer mode, password protected settings, laptop battery mode), the software has a healthy dose of extra features.

One feature that can’t be overstated is the unique integration of two separate scanning engines. Running an antivirus scan using both engines increases efficacy, and won’t considerably slow you down. And while there is plenty of overlap with 2 scanning engines, the virus signature database is the heart of any security software (and getting two for the price of one is great).

Another impressive feature is the self-learning fingerprinting and whitelisting. Basically, the software is able to automatically analyze files and determine if they pose a threat (or will in the future).

Updates:

Especially good for the set-and-forget user, updates are performed automatically, and in the background. Both virus signature definitions and actual program updates will run automatically, or can be updated manually.

Regular updates are performed every hour, and are small enough that they won’t affect regular computer use. If you’re using G DATA at work, you can easily set up the software to update with your proxy server.

Help & Support:

G DATA AntiVirus has the typical in-program help files and traditional help (searchable support section and online support form). They also have an emergency phone line for immediate assistance. Noticeably missing from the support lineup was the ability to chat with support online, or a support forum.

Summary:

Overall, G Data AntiVirus is one of the best desktop antivirus solutions available on the market. We’d still like to see a few more features added to the lineup, but we can confidently recommend the software as one of the most effective and resource-friendly antivirus software.
